Write achievements, not duties
“Responsible for billing” tells a recruiter nothing. “Prepared around 300 GST invoices a month with no return filing errors for two years” tells them what you can do. For each job, write two to four lines that start with a verb and, where you can, include a number: how many, how much, how fast, how much better.

Before you send it
- Read it aloud once. Spelling mistakes are the most common reason a resume is put aside.
- Use a sensible email address, and make sure the phone number is one you answer.
- Change the headline and the first few skills to match each job you apply for.
- Keep the file name professional: Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf.
Keep it true
Employers verify degrees, dates and previous employers, often after you have joined. A false claim can cost you the job years later. Present what you have done as well as you can, and leave out what you have not.
Questions people ask
How long should my resume be?
One page if you have less than about ten years of experience. Recruiters spend well under a minute on the first read, so every line should earn its place. Two pages is fine for a long career.
What should a fresher write when there is no work experience?
Lead with your education, then use the Projects section for college projects, internships, competitions, volunteering or anything you built yourself. For each, say what you did and what came of it. Add the skills and tools you can actually use.
Should I add a photo?
Only if the employer asks for one, or it is normal in your field, such as hospitality, aviation or front-office roles. For most office and technical jobs in India a photo is optional, and many large companies prefer resumes without one.
Do I need the declaration at the end?
It is not required, but many Indian employers and most government-related applications still expect it. Tick the option and the declaration, place, date and signature lines are added.
Will this resume pass ATS screening software?
The layout is a single column with standard headings and real text, which is what applicant tracking systems read best. Use the same words the job advertisement uses for skills and job titles, where they truthfully apply to you.
Resume, CV or biodata: which one do I need?
For a job application in India, 'resume' and 'CV' usually mean the same one or two page document. A biodata is a different thing, used for marriage proposals and some government forms. There is a separate marriage biodata format on this site.
